Cameras that react while someone is still at the gate, with strobes, a siren and a recorded warning, triggered only by people and vehicles in the zones you choose.
An active deterrence camera is a normal 4K camera with three extras built in: red and blue strobe lights, a speaker that can sound a siren or play a recorded message, and on-board detection that knows the difference between a person, a vehicle and everything else. When a person or vehicle enters a zone you have drawn, the camera reacts on the spot and your phone gets the alert at the same moment.
The point is timing. A normal camera gives you footage of what happened. A deterrence camera gives someone a reason to leave before it happens.
The active deterrence package starts at $1,890 installed. It includes four 4K cameras with siren and strobe, an eight channel 4K recorder so there is room to add more cameras later, a 2TB surveillance drive, full colour night vision, two-way audio from your phone and person and vehicle filtering. Equipment has a three year warranty and the workmanship has five.
Driveways and carports are the obvious spots, especially where cars are parked outside overnight. On acreage around Karalee, Pine Mountain and Marburg, sheds full of tools and machinery are a good fit, because there is often nobody close enough to hear anything else. Businesses with a yard or a rear loading area use them after hours, when anyone in the zone should not be there.
They suit side gates too. A person stepping through a side gate at 2am is exactly the event you want the camera to react to.
A badly set up deterrence camera goes off for the cat and gets switched off within a week. The setup is most of the value. We draw detection zones tightly around the areas that matter, set the camera to react to people or vehicles only, and put the loud responses on a schedule. A common setup is a voice warning in the evening and the full siren after midnight, with strobes only during the day.
Wildlife matters out here. Kangaroos, possums and foxes move through a lot of Ipswich yards at night, and older motion detection treated them all as intruders. Person and vehicle detection on the camera itself filters most of that out.
These cameras can record sound as well as play it. In Queensland, recording a private conversation you are not part of can break the Invasion of Privacy Act, so we usually leave audio recording off on outdoor cameras and use the speaker for warnings and talkback only. Our guide to Queensland CCTV laws covers this in more detail.
It can if it is set up carelessly. Sirens can be limited to night hours, to specific zones, or replaced with a voice warning or strobe only. We set them to suit where the cameras point.
They do different jobs. An alarm protects the inside of the building and can be monitored. Deterrence cameras work outside, before anyone gets in. Many people have both.
Yes. From the app you can set off the siren or strobe, or talk through the camera's speaker, whenever you are watching live.
