Long driveways, a gate you cannot see from the house and sheds a hundred metres away. Rural blocks need a camera system built around distance.
A suburban system has a few cable runs of 10 to 25 metres. On acreage, the gate might be 300 metres from the house and the machinery shed another 80 in the other direction. Network cable carries power and video reliably for about 100 metres in a single run, so a rural system is really a series of decisions about how to get past that limit.
For a shed within 100 metres, a direct Cat6 run in conduit, buried or along a fence line, is still the most reliable option. For longer distances there are three tools. A PoE extender boosts the signal partway along the run. Fibre optic cable has no practical distance limit and is immune to lightning induced surges, which matters in storm season. A point to point wireless bridge links two buildings with a pair of small dishes, as long as they can see each other.
The rural parts of Ipswich are varied. Karalee and Chuwar have a lot of one to five acre blocks along the river. Pine Mountain and Mount Crosby are hilly and treed, which can block a wireless link, so line of sight gets checked on site. Further west, around Marburg, Grandchester, Ashwell and Calvert, blocks are bigger and flatter with long open driveways, which suits wireless links well.
Floods and storms both matter. Low parts of Karalee and Chuwar have gone under in past Brisbane River floods, so recorders go up high and outdoor connections are sealed properly. Surge protection on long outdoor runs is worth having anywhere lightning is common.
The gate is usually the most important camera on a rural block, because every vehicle passes it. Reading a number plate at night needs a camera chosen and aimed for that job: a narrow field of view on the spot where cars slow down for the gate, with settings that stop headlights washing out the plate. A wide camera on the same pole shows the vehicle and anyone getting out.
On acreage the yard is never empty at night. Kangaroos, wallabies, foxes and wandering cattle will set off basic motion detection all night. Cameras with person and vehicle detection on board ignore most of them, so your phone only goes off for the things you need to know about.
Recording happens on the recorder at the house, not in the cloud, so a slow connection does not affect what gets recorded. It only affects how smoothly you can watch from your phone. Starlink and fixed wireless NBN are both fine for remote viewing, and we set the app to use a lower quality stream when you are away so it loads quickly.
A single Cat6 run carries power and video up to about 100 metres. Beyond that we use a PoE extender, fibre, or a wireless bridge between buildings.
Yes. Recording happens on the recorder at the house, so the internet only matters for viewing from your phone. Starlink and fixed wireless both handle that, and we set up the app on whichever you have.
Yes. Options are a long cable run, a wireless bridge from the nearest building, or a solar powered 4G camera. Which one fits depends on the distance and whether there is line of sight back to the house.
